When You Need Wisdom, Ask God

Graphic with Bible Verse James 1:5

A Devotional on James 1:5

Sometimes the hardest part of life isn’t the work itself — it’s knowing what to do next.

Should I move forward or wait?

Is this the right opportunity?

Am I making the right decision?

So many women carry the quiet weight of trying to figure everything out on their own. We analyze every option, seek advice from others, and often feel overwhelmed by the pressure to choose correctly.

But God gives us a beautiful promise in Scripture:

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” — James 1:5 (KJV)

This verse reminds us of something powerful:You were never meant to figure life out by yourself.

God Invites Us to Ask

James doesn’t say if a few people lack wisdom. He says if any of you lack wisdom.

That means every single one of us.

No matter how strong our faith is, there will always be moments when we don’t know the next step. And instead of expecting us to solve everything alone, God invites us to simply ask.

Ask in prayer.

Ask with humility.

Ask with trust.

God isn’t frustrated by your questions. He welcomes them.

A Generous God

The verse says God gives wisdom liberally.

That word means generously and freely.

God isn’t stingy with guidance. He doesn’t ration wisdom to the “most spiritual” people or only to those who have everything together. When you ask sincerely, He gives.

And He gives without shame.

Scripture also tells us that He “upbraideth not,” meaning He doesn’t criticize or scold you for asking. He doesn’t say, “You should already know this.” Instead, He meets you with patience and grace.

Wisdom Often Comes in Quiet Ways

Sometimes we expect wisdom to arrive like a lightning bolt — immediate and obvious.

But often, God’s wisdom comes quietly.

It may come through Scripture that suddenly speaks directly to your situation.

It may come through a peaceful conviction in your heart.

It may come through wise counsel from someone you trust.Or through a door opening — or closing — at just the right time.

God knows how to guide His children.

Your role is not to control the outcome.

Your role is simply to seek Him.

When You Don’t Know What to Do

If you’re standing at a crossroads today, unsure about the next step, remember this promise.

You don’t have to carry the pressure of perfect decisions.

God already sees the path ahead. When you ask for wisdom, you’re inviting Him to guide you through it.

And He promises that He will.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being a God who gives wisdom generously.

When I feel unsure or overwhelmed by decisions, remind me to turn to You first.

Quiet my fears and guide my thoughts so I can walk in the direction You have prepared for me.

Help me trust that Your wisdom is greater than my understanding.

Amen. 🤍
