Choosing the Right Friends: A Biblical Guide for Teens

Devotional for Teens

Friendship is one of the most powerful influences in a teenager’s life.

The people we spend time with shape how we think, what we value, and the direction our lives take. It’s often said, “Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future.” And honestly, there’s a lot of truth in that.

God cares deeply about the friendships in our lives. The Bible reminds us that the people we walk closely with can either draw us closer to Him or slowly pull us away.

That’s why learning how to choose the right friends is such an important part of growing in faith.

Why Friendships Matter So Much

During the teenage years especially, friendships become a huge part of everyday life. Friends influence decisions, attitudes, priorities, and even identity.

The Bible speaks directly to this.

Proverbs 13:20 (KJV)“He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.”

The people we walk with influence the path we take. Wise friends help us grow. They encourage our faith, support us when life is hard, and challenge us to become who God created us to be.

But the wrong friendships can slowly lead us in the wrong direction.

This doesn’t mean we stop being kind or loving toward people. Jesus showed love to everyone. But it does mean we should be careful about who we allow to have the strongest influence in our lives.

What Godly Friendship Looks Like

Godly friendships look different from the kind of friendships the world often promotes.

Instead of focusing on popularity, image, or fitting in, biblical friendships are built on encouragement, honesty, and faith.

A godly friend:

  • Encourages you in your faith

  • Tells you the truth, even when it’s hard

  • Supports you when life gets difficult

  • Helps you grow closer to Jesus

  • Celebrates your victories and walks with you through struggles

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (KJV) reminds us:

“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another.”

The right friends build you up rather than tear you down.

Sometimes Choosing Right Friends Means Standing Alone

One of the hardest parts of choosing the right friends is realizing that not every relationship is healthy.

Sometimes we have to step back from friendships that pull us away from our faith.

And sometimes that means standing alone for a season.

But here’s the good news: you are never truly alone when you walk with God.

2 Timothy 4:17 (KJV) says:

“Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me.”

When we choose to honor God with our friendships, He always provides the strength and support we need.

Becoming the Kind of Friend God Calls You to Be

Another important part of choosing the right friends is becoming the right friend.

Jesus showed us the ultimate example of love and friendship.

John 15:12–13 (KJV)“This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Godly friendship isn’t just about finding the right people. It’s also about becoming someone who loves, encourages, and supports others the way Christ does.

When we become that kind of friend, we naturally attract friendships that reflect those same values.

A Devotional to Help Teens Navigate Friendships

Because friendships are such an important part of life, I created a devotional specifically to help teens understand how to choose the right friends.

Final Encouragement

Friendships will always shape our journey in life.

The right friends can strengthen our faith, encourage our purpose, and help us grow into the people God created us to be.

And while choosing the right friends isn’t always easy, it is always worth it.

Pray for wisdom. Seek friendships that honor God. And remember that the strongest friendships are the ones that help us walk closer with Him.
